In the St. Mary’s Orphanage Asylum, there were 93 children and 10
sisters who had tried to survive. When the winds started reaching around 150 miles
an hour with a 20 feet storm surge, the sisters and children heard the crash of
the boys’ dormitory as it gave away to the flood waters. Eventually the sisters
and children also heard the girls’ dormitory collapse. Mother Superior Camillus
and all the other sisters tied 6-8 kids to themselves. The sisters tied the
children to themselves as a survival instinct because the children were small,
not as strong, and could be swept away more easily. It could be considered a
valid survival strategy, besides for the fact that only 3 orphan boys survived the
storm. The sisters and children were not the only ones who held onto each other
to try to survive. After the storm the body of a mother was found trapped in
barbed wire, and she was still holding onto her baby tightly.
