Jess and Bill Simpson anchored their schooner “Hard Times” in the Pelican Island, just north of Galveston Bay. They later discovered that was probably the worst spot they could have anchored. When the wind started getting really harsh and the schooner was threatened by the wreckage that was now being swept across Pelican Island by the wind and the sea, the Simpsons were certain that  the “Hard Times” would surely sink. Later Bill recalled that he could hear the screams and shouts for help that people helplessly cried out as they were being swept past. The brothers threw out rope in the direction of the screams hoping that people being swept by would catch onto the rope and safely be pulled into the schooner. By the end of the night they were able to rescue five boys who
were able to hang onto the line until they pulled them aboard. The brothers
were not just thinking of themselves even in their very unstable situation with
their boat. They were able to find courage and helped saved five boys who were
found to be in a worst situation than them.
