to come up with an idea that saved many lives. Many families would move to
different houses when the one they were staying in was on the verge of
collapsing. That one man who was in the crowd noticed something floating
around, he made his way through the water to go and get a closer look. When he
got to it he saw it was a cistern which had floated off its foundation. He
grabbed the cistern and pulled himself up only to find that it was empty. He
twisted a tablecloth into a rope and tied it to a nearby two-by-four. He quickly
made it into a shelter and allowed others to climb in for safety. There were nine
people including the Lothringers and a woman with a nine month old baby. There
were nails inside the cistern which ripped away at their clothing as they fell
to the bottom. They spent the rest of the night inside the cistern and survived.
