When the storm started to get really bad people were becoming
desperate in wanting to save themselves and their families. If the shelter
people were staying in collapsed, or if they got swept away by the strong
currents the victims would helplessly try to find a tree, debris, wood from a house…
anything they would cling on to stay above water and keep from drowning. Two
kids during the storm had been swept away from any of the shelter they were
seeking. They came to two trees which they held on to until the end of the storm.
There was much wreckage within the storm; at one point the Cline brothers used a
wooden door, that had flew off a house, as a raft. Later they said that they
probably even had drifted off to sea. Some neighbors tried to help each other to
stay alive. For example Jim Moore helped a neighbor’s family out of their house by guiding them in a wooden bathtub to a safer place.
