Many were warned about the hurricane, even though at the time the City of Galveston did not have a good warning system in place, only few chose to listen. People and families were told to move to higher grounds to keep safe. By Saturday September 8th, early morning, many went on with their daily lives, and went to work. They did not know how bad the storm was going to be. They just thought that it was going to be another Tropical Strom. When the storm got worse, with the city starting to flood, some had stopped their jobs to go and get their families and try to move to higher ground. A popular place that many went to for higher ground was inland at the Tremont Hotel. By the time the storm was at its worst there was at least 700 people at the Hotel. If people couldn’t get access to the Tremont Hotel they would try to go up the stairs of multiple story buildings such as the Lucas Terrace, the Lighthouse, Ursuline Convent etc.. If they had stayed in their homes then they would try to go up to the highest part of a house.
